Atlantic Brewing Company, MacFoochie’s Scottish Ale

A few weeks ago I took the family to MDI to spend the day. We visited Acadia National Park, the weather was cool and comfortable, and the leaves were in peak color. After picking up our park pass we decided to drive up Cadillac Mountain and check out the view, from there we headed down to Sand Beach, my 3 year old had a blast running down the beach. It really was a perfect fall day in Maine. After leaving the park we headed over to Bar Harbor to get a bite to eat only to find three cruise ships and lots of people, so we quickly changed our plans and headed over to Atlantic Brewery Company. Yes that’s right we headed to a brewery for lunch. Mainely Meats Barbecue is on site and a plate full of barbecue with a pint of brewery fresh beer sounded like the perfect way to end a trip to the island. Before I left I ran into their gift shop and picked up a couple bottles of beer including a MacFoochie’s Scottish Ale.

Name: MacFoochie’s Scottish Ale

Brewed by: Atlantic Brewing Company

AVB: 7.8%

Bottle/Draft: 22oz Bottle

Purchased: Atlantic Brewing Company gift shop, Bar Harbor, ME

MacFoochie’s pours very dark, not quite black but does not allow much light through. Raised an off white head that slowly sank into a thin ring around the glass.

The beer smells malty; there is a smoky aroma and a slight woodiness. There is a bit of a piney almost herbal smell. I’m unsure if I’m picking up hops or not.

Rich malty flavor, full bodied, creamy mouthfeel. There is a nice sweetness that balances out the smokiness. Exhaling through the nose after swallowing enhances the smoke flavors. There is a subtle bitterness from the hops but very little flavor impact if any. Some earthy, herbal flavors mingle in here as well, not much alcohol flavor it is masked well.

Overall a really nice, complex beer, I enjoyed the thick, rich flavors and the higher ABV makes it a nice warming beer on a cool fall evening. If you don’t care for the flavor of smoke this is not going to be a beer you will enjoy.

Cheers!
