Coaster Critique: Black Bear Microbrew Bike Maine Brown Ale

Name: Bike Maine Brown

Brewed By: Black Bear Microbrew

ABV: 5.2%

Style: American Brown

Purchased: Black Bear Microbrewery Taproom

Bike Maine Brown poured a mahogany color, deep brown with red highlights when held to the light, no head, this was a full pint.

Nice malty aroma, dark roasted grains, hints of chocolate. The hops mingle in the background adding a hint of citrus.

Flavor follows the nose, roasted grains, and note of chocolate, a little bit of sweetness. Bike Maine is an American Brown so the hops have a notable presence in the flavor; they add a citrusy bite and a nice mellow bitterness.

Overall a really nice American Brown, big malty flavors balanced perfectly with citrusy hops. This beer will be available at the Black Bear Microbrew Taproom, The Family Dog and at the Beer and Music Festival Presented by the Family Dog this Saturday, September 7th in Orono.

As I mentioned in the review the Bike Maine Brown ale is available Saturday September 7th at the Family Dog’s Music and Beer Festival. The festival is going to be held at the municipal parking lot behind the Orono town hall, the Festival kicks off at 1pm with the first band taking the stage at 2pm. This is a 21+ event and admission is free.

Three bands will be performing, The Crown Vic’s start things off with their traditional rockabilly sound from 2-4:30pm followed by Stream Reggae, Maine’s Premiere Reggae band from 4:30-7:30pm and the final band performing is the  Gawler Family band from 4:30-9:30pm.

The menu includes lobster rolls, pulled pork sandwiches, marinated portabella mushroom caps just to name a few items and of course there will be beer. Check out the event and try a Bike Maine Brown Ale, a portion of the proceeds from every Bike Maine Brown ale sold goes to benefit the Bike Maine Event, a week long, 400mile bike trek that starts and ends in Orono as well as the Bicycle Coalition of Maine.
