Book Review: D.G.Yuengling & Son, Inc.

I have on more than one occasion found myself in possession of a bottle or two of Yuengling’s, which of course leads to an Untappd check in and then a stream of inquiry’s that all go something like: “Where did you find that!” Yuengling’s beer is not available in Maine, but it’s become quite clear that they have a fan base here. When I was offered a copy of Images of America D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. I almost dismissed it, but I’m glad I didn’t.

Reprinted with permission from D.G. Yuengling & Sons, Inc, by Robert Musson, MD.

The author of the book is Robert Musson, MD, a practicing physician from Ohio who has authored two other books with Arcadia Publishing as well as some self-published books on the brewing industry.

The most Intensive reading in this book comes in the first three pages, the forward which is written by the President of D.G Yuengling & Son, Inc., Dick Yuengling, the acknowledgement and the introduction, none of which are a full page long.

I found myself having a difficult time putting this book down, the pages are full of photographs of the early days of the Yuengling brewery and old advertising, each captioned with facts and information about America’s oldest brewery. The book moves from the breweries earliest days, through prohibition and into photos of Yuengling’s new breweries.

I sincerely enjoyed this book; I was fascinated by the photos of the old school brewing equipment, horse drawn wagons loaded with Yuengling’s kegs and vintage advertising that still makes me want a beer. I would recommend this book to anyone who’s interested in the history of American brewing, the history of Yuengling’s brewery or just loves Breweriana.

Cheers!
